Arousal is a term used in psychology and physiology and refers to the general degree of activation of the central nervous system in humans and in vertebrates. Characteristic features are attention, alertness or responsiveness. A very low level of arousal is found in sleep, a very high level of pain and similar states of excitement. Even anger, anxiety or sexual desire lead to a strong arousal. However, arousal itself has no emotional component and is therefore distinguishable from "arousal". Arousal can be measured by the electrical voltage measured in the EEG and its frequency. It is triggered by sensory impulses to a specific part of the brainstem by stimulation from the cerebral cortex and by the level of the hormone adrenaline. It affects the whole organism, the brain, the vegetative nervous system and therefore also the metabolism. Manuela Kerer translates this level of activation to the three zithers and places them in different arousal levels. The result is a tonal-rhythmically rasterized score, which makes clear the sonically extremely diverse possibilities of the Zithers.

Arousal ist ein Begriff der Psychologie und der Physiologie und bezeichnet den allgemeinen Grad der Aktivierung des zentralen Nervensystems beim Menschen und bei Wirbeltieren. Charakteristische Merkmale sind Aufmerksamkeit, Wachheit oder Reaktionsbereitschaft. Ein sehr niedriges Arousal-Level hat man im Schlaf, ein sehr hohes bei Schmerzen und ähnlichen Erregungszuständen. Auch Ärger, Angst oder sexuelles Verlangen führen zu einem starken Arousal. Arousal selbst hat jedoch keine emotionale Komponente und ist daher von „Erregung“ zu unterscheiden. Arousal kann gemessen werden, und zwar durch die im EEG gemessene elektrische Spannung und deren Frequenz. Ausgelöst wird es durch sensorische Impulse auf einen bestimmten Teil des Hirnstamms durch Stimulation aus der Hirnrinde und durch den Spiegel des Hormons Adrenalin. Es beeinflusst den ganzen Organismus, Gehirn, vegetatives Nervensystem und also auch den Stoffwechsel. Manuela Kerer übersetzt diesen Grad der Aktivierung auf die drei Zithern und versetzt sie in unterschiedliche Arousal-Levels. Daraus entsteht eine klangfarblich-rhythmisch gerasterte Partitur, die die klanglich äußerst vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der Zithern deutlich macht.
